In a 1970 report of the notable residences of Lalibela, Sandro Angelini assessed the vernacular earthen engineering on the Lalibela World Heritage Site, including the attributes of the customary earth houses and investigation of their condition of preservation.
His report portrayed two kinds of vernacular lodging found around there. One sort are a gathering he calls the "tukuls", round cottages worked of stone and as a rule having two stories. The second are the single-story "chika" structures which are round and worked of earth and wattle, which he feels reflects more "shortage".
